It’s probably the first time some of us have ever come across the phrase “men’s mental health week”. And while some of us are aware, only very few people remember this week to recognize men’s mental health week and it’s importance. This in itself says a whole lot about how the world expresses her duty of care to men’s mental health
Men’s Health Week is an annual observance that aims to raise awareness about the health challenges faced by men and promote strategies for better physical and mental well-being.
Today we will discuss strategies for promoting mental health awareness in men.
We know that men are often less likely to address mental health issues that erupt as a result of personal life challenges, societal myths about men, and fear of being judged among others.
To help bridge the gap, we must focus on building up awareness and understanding of the importance of mental health and wellness.
Before discussing these strategies, it’s very important to know that we have men around us, our fathers, uncles, brothers, sons, and husbands. Their mental health state should be of importance to us.
Mental health challenges start from the accumulation of stressors from different life challenges to issues of anxiety disorder, panic attacks, burnout, depression, and graduate to more severe conditions such as suicide attempts, suicide, psychotic behavior, drug and substance abuse, medical conditions such as heart attacks, high blood pressure.
Now here are a few key strategies that can help promote mental health awareness in men:
1. There is an urgent need to educate men on the importance of mental health and how to recognize signs of mental health struggles; early detection of these stressors, diagnosis, and treatment will prevent it from escalating to much more severe conditions.
2. Provision of resources and support for men to access mental health services such as therapy sessions, and mental health first aid among others.
3. Encourage conversations about mental health in social circles and workplaces. Encouraging men to speak up and not to “man up” always is very important. Building relationships and expressing your innermost challenges is a step towards having a sound mental health. Taking that step alone gives an immediate sense of relief of the mental burden. Further deploying of various coping strategies further helps to addresses these challenges.
By implementing these strategies, we can help create a more supportive environment for men to address their mental health challenges, and ultimately improve their overall well-being. Thank you for your time.
